The book "Ergonomia e Usabilidade: Conhecimentos, Métodos e Aplicações" is another step toward shifting a viewpoint which, in Brazil, places human-computer interface design closer to art than to engineering. It offers the reader the knowledge and logical tools that form a part of the ergonometric approach to human-computer interfaces developed by LabiUtil (Usability Laboratory at Federal University of Santa Catarina) since 1995. The ergonometric approach to human-computer interface design for usability takes into account available information on human cognitive skills and abilities, plus those aspects relating to the way work is actually done. Interactive device software, when developed based on this approach, can actually yield products adapted to users and tailored for usability in performing their tasks. The ergonometric approach leads us to believe that such applications are easier to learn, with lower error rates and reduced workloads.
